Plantar fasciitis is a painful foot condition that can come and go. When it comes, you will know it because it will make it extremely difficult for you to go on with your regular routine. The pain can be so bad that it can be near-crippling at times, especially first thing in the morning. This article will educate you on the condition and give you advice for preventing flair ups and dealing with them when they do come.

What causes plantar fasciitis?

Your feet have a ligament, known as the plantar fascia that goes from your heel to the start of your toes. This ligament gives support to the arch. If the plantar fascia gets injured or irritated then it can cause you to experience a great deal of pain. The pain is most often worst near the heel of your foot.

What are the symptoms of plantar fasciitis?

While this condition can cause pain to the arch area of your foot, it generally causes the most pain right at your heel. The pain can feel like a throbbing pain, an ache and most commonly a burning and stinging sensation. The pain can make it hard for you to stand and walk.  Plantar fasciitis can be the most painful first thing in the morning, making it extremely difficult for you to get out of bed.

What are the possible treatments for this condition?

The first course of treatment is generally to give anti-inflammatories to treat the symptoms. You may also be instructed to go through physical therapy to stretch the ligament and strengthen the surrounding muscles. A night splint may be provided that stretches the ligament while you are asleep. Special supports you wear in your shoes may also be prescribed. These supports will aim at giving your feet more even pressure. Steroid shots can sometimes help to control the pain. In severe cases, surgery may be required to detach the ligament from the bone to give relief.

What can you do to get relief from the pain?

Along with taking over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories, there are some other ways you can get some relief when the pain sets in. Massaging your heels and arches before you attempt standing for the first time each morning can help. Also, rolling a frozen water bottle under your foot when it hurts can give you instant pain relief.

How can plantar fasciitis be prevented?

You can prevent the condition by taking good care of your feet. Wear supportive shoes and avoid ones that have high heels which put a lot of stress on your feet. Don't stand for long period of times without giving your feet a break. Avoid walking and standing on very hard surfaces when possible.

Now that you have a better understanding of plantar fasciitis, you will have a better chance of avoiding it and you will know what to do if it does occur. For more information, contact podiatrists like Klein Stanley Jay DPM.
